Fortunately, action is now being taken to tackle this problem. At national level, mental health now has equal status to physical health in UK health policy. Meanwhile, at local level, mental health charities are asking the nation to take 5 minutes on Thursday 5th February to have a conversation about mental health.
“Time to Talk” is an initiative created by mental health charities MIND and Rethink Mental Health. They are encouraging people to make time for their friends, family, clients and colleagues to share their thoughts and talk about a problem. http://www.time-to-change.org.uk/timetotalkday Through this and other events, efforts are being made to remove the stigma associated with mental illness and make it easier for people to access the help they need.
The truth is that it’s not possible to get through life without some sort of crisis. Everyone faces emotional or psychological struggles at some point. According to the Office for National Statistics, one-fifth of adults in the UK experience anxiety or depression. Other sources put the figure at 1 in 4. These problems are very common, so nobody should feel embarrassed to come forward and ask for help.
To give people a chance to discuss their problems, I will be providing “Time to Talk” for free all day on 5th February.
